Specs’ Breakdown
1. SEC approves spot 8 Ethereum ETFs
⌐◪-◪ → The SEC just approved 8 Ethereum ETFs for Grayscale, Bitwise, BlackRock, VanEck, Ark, and more.
The approval came from the SEC’s Trading and Markets division, not Gary Gensler or the four other commissioners.
Galaxy Digital says the Ethereum ETFs won’t start trading until July or August, a stark contrast to the relatively speedy listing of the BTC ETFs.
More importantly, this approval is “implicit recognition” from the SEC that Ether is not a security — which could extend to other tokens as well.
Another historic win for the crypto industry.
2. U.S. House passes anti-CBDC bill to fight for financial privacy
⌐◪-◪ → The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a bill banning the Federal Reserve from establishing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC).
This is a BIG win for financial privacy — protecting us against an Orwellian surveillance state.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said it best, "The idea of a Central Bank Digital Currency is terrifying!”.
Note, this is separate from the FIT21 bill that passed 2 the House Vote 2 days ago.
Another historic win for the crypto industry.
3. Coinbase loses Supreme Court case over Dogecoin sweepstakes
⌐◪-◪ → Yesterday, Coinbase lost their first Supreme Court case 9-0, a class action lawsuit over Dogecoin sweepstakes.
TL;DR: a handful of disgruntled customers accused Coinbase of employing false and misleading tactics to promote a Dogecoin sweepstakes in 2021.
While we’ve had a lot of wins this week — the Ethereum ETF approval, FIT 21, and the anti-CBDC bill — we must acknowledge our losses too.
Fortunately, this case doesn’t seem to have major implications for the industry — it was almost entirely about arbitration agreements.
You win some, you lose some.
